Linux Problem!

Help!
I have been having lots of trouble with RedHat Linux 8.0! I'm very new to Linux, and I can't seem to get it working! First, I tried installing it on one computer, but the mouse did not work. It worked during installation, but not when it was loaded! It was a serial mouse.
I decided to move my hard drives (two 1.2 GBs) to another system I had. I got a kernel error, telling me there was no init file. Then I re-installed Linux, and when I tried to run it this time, it didn't even start up! It just said:
Uncompressing Linux....
System Halt
crc error
(note, I can't remember what the error said exactly, but it was about CRC)
Do you know what is wrong? I have topped off one hard drive, but I have another that is empty. I am going to try re-installing without Open Office this afternoon and see if that helps.
TIA,
Alex

Alex,
Firstly, I'll make a statement that is largely unrelated to your question.
Having worked for Red Hat in the past, I can tell you with certainty that there is a corporate strategy involved with their ".0" releases. 8.0 is, of course, a .0 release.
Their strategy is to fill their .0 releases with all kinds of new (and untested) software and configurations. Then, the folks who use the .0 release will submit all their reports for the bugs that are found.
Then, the .1 is released with all these bugs fixed, and that is then installed and tested by everyone. Finally, Red Hat releases the .2 (and sometimes the .3) version and it's as solid as a rock.
I make it a rule that I always use the last revision of the releases. This means that I was using Red Hat 6.2 until Red Hat 7.2 came out. (Red Hat 7.3 was released not long ago, and of course I upgraded to that). I will continue to use Red Hat 7.3 on ALL my machines (production or staging) until 8.2 is released. 8.0 is just far too buggy (by design).
Your problem is either related to bad hardware (a bad drive, which seems to happen to me far more than I'd prefer) or faulty configuration settings via Red Hat. Frankly, I have no idea which it might be.
My dad tried Red Hat 8.0, and almost became completely disinterested in Linux as a result of the experience. Since moving back to Red Hat 7.3, he's the happiest camper in the Linux camp. May I recommend Red Hat 7.3 to you?
Either way, you are going to have to reload your boot sector. You do that by re-flashing whatever partition is mounted on /boot/. In the old days, you'd do that by simply loading up Linux (boot disk) and re-run lilo. I don't know how to do it now that grub is the loader. Just re-installing with Red Hat 7.3 will handle it for you.
Summary: Grab a copy of Red Hat 7.3, install it (let the installer partition your drive for you) and you should be ready to go. If that fails, try a different hard drive.
best,

Thanks for the advice! I found out my problem was just the drive being too
full. It works now, and I am enjoying it now. Does 7.2 look just as good
as 8.0? I really like the new look.
P.S. I won't be getting anymore .0 software!

I don't really know how much better 7.x is than 8.0, in terms of asthetic value. For me, whenever I install a Linux box, the first thing I do is get rid of GNOME and KDE and install good old WindowMaker (been using it since 1999, before which I was using AfterStep, which became WindowMaker in 99).
So, really, for me 7.3 looks identical to 8.0. :-) My dad did report that 8.0 had a bit more attention to detail in the GNOME/KDE interface. I've just never had a lot of good experiences with any of those desktops. They are still a little buggy and buggy desktops interfere with my ability to get work done. All I need is a windowing environment with a pager, titlebar, and dockapps.
Just for fun, here's a screenshot of my desktop (I just took it). [HYPERLINK@standardout.com] (60K).
