ISO SubSys Error!

I just gave a computer to a family we are friends with, and they have been having lots of trouble with it. I think it was the software they installed on it. Most likely it was cleanweb, because that was the last thing they installed. They also installed Word (I do not know if it was 2000 or XP). They get this error when they start the computer:
An I/O Subsystem driver failed to load. A File in the .IOSubsys subdirectry is corrupt or system is low on memory.
This is after they get a lot of the "You must have deleted some files... Please re-install program..." kind of thing, but they can "Press any key" past them. I gave them Windows 98 SD, but they thought it was FD and used a W98 SD upgrade on it. It also has swordsearcher (excellent bible software to say the least) on it, but that was working when I had it at home.
It is a 200 MHz - 98 MB RAM - two 1.2 GB hard disks - and they get the message before windows starts completely, tried safe mode…
Hope you can help,
Alex

Ahh! The Office errors. I've had a similar problem happen, but with the OS. What I decided, was that the drive is going bad, which means a complete reload, unless you have Norton Ghost.

Is that what it is? Well, I am going to try Office 97 instead, maybe it won't give me so much trouble. I suppose a reload won't be that bad, our family is going over this Saturday.
Thanks...

Alex,
Whoops... Looks like I didn't say everything in my last post. You will probably have to replace the drive(s) that are going bad and then reload the computer.

Hi,
Just a question: Do you mean reload as in reformat?
