Laptop Hard Drive

I know this isn't really a programming question but here goes. I have several questions.
I have been using my dad's old laptop now for a couple of years. however, I needed a newer operating system which it couldn't support. So Dad traded some hobby equipment for a friend's unused laptop.
We loaded XP onto the laptop, formally 98 SE. I have four or five programs and the 4.25 GB hard drive is full. We were trying to discover why when we checked out Windows Explorer. There were a bunch of programs that were on there before but that we can't access unless going through Windows Explorer. Does this have to do with a partition that was deleted while upgrading? I though that the hard drive was wiped clean before XP was loaded. What actually happened?
Is there some way to fix this?
Second of all, I am considering getting a bigger hard drive. However, currently I do not have enough resources to do so.
The size I am looking at is around 40 GB. So far, the best I have seen seemed to be the Western Digital Scorpio 40 GB with 8 MB cache. It's about $80. Would anyone suggest something different? Where is a good place that I could get hard drives? I have looked on Tiger Direct, where else would you suggest?
I won't be able to reply until next weekend so I'm sorry if I don't get back within a day or two.

I don't know if this will help, but you might try defragmenting your harddrive. Just go to My Computer, right-click, select properties, and under the "Tools" tab, click the Defragment button.

Did you reformat the drive before installing XP? If you leave the existing partition intact, the XP installer dosn't overwrite any existing programs. If you don't have anything valuable on it, you could try reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP to completely clean it off. |
