I have never published a website before (I've created/written many) and can't find a clear answer as to how to do it. I have Microsoft, and have tried using the Web Publisher to publish my sites to the web but the only way I can publish a site to the web is (according to Microsoft) to get a .NET passport, which I don't really want to get. My internet is Earthlink and they only allow you to use their webspace by using a website creater tool on their site called Trellix. Can someone walk me through the steps to finally getting my site on the web?

Thanks for your help!
God bless,
Tim

P.S. Thanks to everyone who helped me get started in programming! I stopped for a while but I'm starting again.

Does you ISP give you FTP access? That is the best way. If you don't I would suggest that you get a host that does.

Tim,

Really, the best way is to find a Windows hosting solution (This will enable you to deploy ASP and .NET solutions, and other powerful Microsoft apps). Then, go to the server admin, from the hosting company's website and create yourself an FTP account (if they haven't already done that). Then, go to [HYPERLINK@ftp.yourdomainname.com,] and enter in your username and password. It will look just like Windows explorer, and then you can copy up your files.

You also will need a domain name, to access your website. The hosting company should be able to help you to get it set up from there. A lot of it stems from the control panel (on the company's website), and how good it is, how much you will be able to customize it.

I think that a Google will reveal plentiful results. Watch out for the $5 hosting programs! They might have banner ads, or other gotcha's. Just read their privacy policy and the other fine print before signing up.

Hope this helps,

Joseph

We host a [HYPERLINK@www.ixwebhosting.com] , with a linux account.

Here is one site we host there:
[HYPERLINK@www.dailylifeministries.com]
(this isn't our site, we made it for some friends)

Hello!
Can you give me a step-by-step process for publishing a site with a name such as:

I use Internet Explorer and Earthlink(I don't know which one is a server?).
My OS is Microsoft XP home edition if that makes any difference. I'll be glad to answer any more questions to help "set me straight" :)
I would also like to use PHP, imbedded in HTML, for my website I'm planning , so that may also be something you might need to know.
One last question,
How can I know if my ISP gives FTP access?

Thanks for your help! I'll be glad to get published on the web :)

Tim,

Hello! I'm going to copy your message, below, and (try to) give you an answer for each one.

> I use Internet Explorer and Earthlink(I don't know which one is a server?).

Neither is a server (Internet Explorer is how you graphically access the internet, and Earthlink is how your computer accesses the internet). Domain names and server's are two different things. Domain names use a database that basically does a redirect (to your server), but still keeps the domain name. A server is where the files, for the website, are stored.

> My OS is Microsoft XP home edition if that makes any difference.

Microsoft XP HE (Home Edition) is the unique blend of price and features. One thing that is left out , is IIS (hey, the average user could care less what IIS is :). XP Professional does have IIS, but I've heard that there's a way to install (I really don't know whether its legal or not) IIS on a HE computer.

> I would also like to use PHP, imbedded in HTML, for my website I'm planning , so that may also be something you might need to know.

I would recommend starting out with IIS. It is fairly secure (I wouldn't store any sensitive data on the computer, as with any server), very easy to configure, and control - it even comes with ASP.

If you did decide to go down the external hosting route, [HYPERLINK@www.guardianhosting.net] would probably be a good fit for you. I don't know all of the hosting details with them, but our experience (limited to domain names only), has been great.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Joseph!
Guardian Hosting seems to be a good choice, but I wasn't prepared for buying a domain name :0. I'm going to look around on the site and talk with my parents about it. I'm not sure, but their was a temporary account deal for free that came with a free FTP server and a few other things. What do you think? Better to spend $9.95 a year or get the temp. account? Any advice or tips would be appreciated!

[HYPERLINK@www.godaddy.com] has rock bottom prices on domains, although I've never bought from them.

Of all the web hosts I checked out, [HYPERLINK@www.1and1.com] has the best deals. You can get either Linux (with PHP) or Windows (with ASP) Beginner account for $2.24 a month. It would come with FTP, and a free domain name.
