Hi!

I'm not sure of the exact terminoligy, so please bear with me :-)

How do I set up apache to accept something like "www.m36t.com" instead of just "localhost" or "127.0.0.101"? I've tried reading the docs but it isn't making sense to me. I assume I have to modify something in the httpd.conf file, right?

Thanks!
Jake

Hi Jake,

If you just want to use that URL from your own machine to hit your local web server you can add a line like this: "127.0.0.1 [HYPERLINK@www.m36t.com]" to your HOSTS file. If you're using Windows 2000 or XP this file should be in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERSETC. You could also do a search for it. Although this file is rarely used these days, it is still the first place that Windows TCP/IP looks for a domain name, so you can even assign existing domain names to your local machine and it will effectively block those domains.

If, on the other hand, you want other people across the internet to reach your machine with that URL then you will need to have that domain name reserved and have an entry in a public name server. This is a bit more involved and requires a static IP address ( something most ISPs don't provide ).

Hope that helps.

Hi DaveKlein!

Thanks! That worked. But just out of curiosity how do you get a static IP address? If its not too complicated.

Try a service like dyndns.org ([HYPERLINK@www.dyndns.org]). It gives you a domain name and all you have to do is set up a program to update the ip address on their database. For example: I have a DSL connection. Once and a while the ip address changes. Then the router automaticly sends the new IP address to dyndns.org. If your router does not support that, there is a whole list of third party programs that will update it.

You'll need to purchase a domain name to use something like [HYPERLINK@www.m36t.com.] The free version of DynDNS only supports subdomains (like m36t.homelinux.com). If you have a domain name, then you could use [HYPERLINK@www.zoneedit.com] or [HYPERLINK@www.granitecanyon.com] to provide free dynamic DNS service.
