What programming language to start with?

My son is 15 1/2 and is homeschooled. He is computer-oriented and is taking an XHTML/HTML course. If he wants to move toward the programming/computer world, but has no idea of the specifics:
what would be the best programming language to start with ?
and
how should he study it (self-study, Internet course
