My Dad and I need to make an important decision in the near future. We have a few websites that all access the same MYSQL database, the server side scripting language is CFML, and it uses the MYODBC driver to access the database. Now these sites may have thousands of visitors a day and there may be a performance catch while using MYSQL through the MYODBC driver. (A webmaster is programming all this) We do not know the CFML language which means that neither of us can make framework changes. however we know a'bit about PHP and MYSQL So we have 4 choices:
1. Take the time and reprogram the sites to use PHP?
2. Outsource the work to a more knowledgeable person?(keep in mind we have a very low budget)
3. Leave it like it is? (no changes)
4. OR maybe there is a better option?

Please pray for me and my Dad as we make this important decision.
(And post your comments/answers)

Samuel,

MySQL and PHP is my specialty, and I am willing to help a brother who needs help (not that I am any more experienced at PHP/MySQL than you...). If you want to have some of my free services, send me an E-mail, and I'll see what I can do.

If performance is an issue, I may be able to help out with that specifically. Performance has been one of the things that I've had to become something of an expert on, over the years.

Performance is an intersting concept that many people have specific opinions on. My experience is that the techniques typically used to improve performance as observed by a single user are very different from the techniques needed to scale an application to hundredsor to thousands of users.

I have worked on applications that were scalable to tens of thousands of users, with an ASP front end. These types of applications were sizable enough to require considerable design up front.

How many concurrent users do you expect? By concurrent users, I do not mean users logged on and looking at their screens, but users making nearly simultaneous requests so that some are waiting for server resources being used by another.
