As an alternative to the newsgroups which often have bad language and other undesirable influences, this will be a safe haven for us all with technical questions.
There are a couple dads with excellent programming experience around, we will just pray that God sends us a few more as needed.
In Christ Jesus,

Thanks for setting this up Steve and Dave. I will try to check, at least, daily to see if there is anything I can help with. My work is mostly with Delphi (pascal) and Java. I know a few other programmers that might be interested in joining in. I will pass this on to them as well.

Strange as it may seem, I'm particularly interested in programming in assembly language, especially on the old computers and video game systems I grew up with - Commodore 64, Atari 2600, etc. though of course, I'm familiar with C and a bit of the more modern languages.
Learning assembly on one of these old machines is an excellent way to *really* understand how a computer works - none of the fundamentals have changed in these 20+ years, but it has become a lot more complicated.
Anyway, if anyone has any comments, I'd be glad to talk :) |

Hello,
I think this is a great idea as I want my children to be able to use the internet as a resource. I am a hardware engineer that programs in C/C++, Visual Basic, Verilog/VHDL, and HTML. I plan to bring my children up into the exciting world of computer electronics in the hopes that we can all work together someday in our own company. |

Hi everyone, thought I'd add my 2 cents. Great idea with the programming forum. Most of my experience is in Web application development in IIS using VB, COM, Java, HTML, JavaScript, SQL and some C++. Also Some Delphi and Linux in the past but I may have to clear the cob webs for that. Again GREAT idea and thanks!

Hey! Guess I need to introduce my self also :-)!I'm a new PHP and MySQL programmer, and am learning Pascal. I have really liked programming. It is very interesting, I started out with Pascal, and when I recently started learning PHP, PHP is SOO much easier with knowing Pascal.
I am probably going to be asking a lot of questions :-).
Thanks,

Hi all,
I'm not much of a coder, but I worked as a Sybase DBA for some years, and now work for Sybase supporting a datawarehouse DMBS called IQ. If there is any sort of SQL or tuning issues that may arise, I have access to plenty of resources if we can 't get answers here. (Though it sounds like with the experience and knowledge base so far, this forum may rival Microsoft one day). :)

Howdy... my wife found this and thought it would be a good forum for me. I agreed and here I am. I'm a EE with about 20 years in the biz...now mostly doing C++, Java, win2k, Linux development and no more HW design. The last several gigs were at startups (actually, 7 jobs over 14 years) and I have used quite a few web technologies like JSP, jakarta-tomcat, jakarta-struts, JavaScript, HTML, servlets, etc. I'm very interested in somehow becoming a consultant in order to have more control over my career focus. I've been praying about this recently. Glad to see this forum. Hopefully, we can explore some interesting topics.

Hi, all! This is a great idea.
I'm an experienced C/C++/Java programmer who has dabbled in Delphi, Perl, PHP, Python, and VB for fun. I'm currently dabbling in ColdFusion and primarily use Java at work (this includes AWT/Swing programming as well as EJBs, JSP, and servlets).
I'll help where I can and learn where I can't. Thanks again.

I am not a programmer, however, I am a network engineer and would be happy to offer my assistance to any and all in regards to allowing computers to talk to one another. I don't know if that is what Steve had in mind with this board, however, it is computer related so I thought I would post.

Just thought I'd say "Hello"...
I'm a Unix; C; Oracle-DBA; with some net background,
who used to spend years enjoying the VAX/VMS systems,
before they became extinct. (there are a few still
around, but sightings are rare, sort of like Loch-Ness)
When I have time to study 'tech topics', I tend to grab
a stack of books, and spend the evening sitting at Denny's
browsing chapters, and downing coffee. I'm currently
trying to decide which areas to spend the next two months
immersed with: More Linux, Net-protocols & routing, HTML
More Oracle, Perl, C++, Vis-C++, PHP, Javascript, mySQL,
Unix internals/config/admin/coding/tuning, XML, CSS, Java
...oh yea, I still intend to sleep at least once per week.

This is very good. I was wondering, what language is it written in?
Now to introduce myself. I've only hobby programmed, but know quite a bit about VB, ASP, probably intermediate at SQL. I also know HTML and am attempting to learn JAVA and Delphi. By trade I'm a PC Technician (freelance) after having been in technical support for over 5 years. I've also done testing, Q&A (both software and hardware). Officially though; I was in college to be a music education major. Quite a twist there, huh? :-) |

I think I'm the only son in here but it's for Fathers AND sons.
I have been in computer stuff for about 2 years now.
My programming experience are in PHP and HTML(a tiny bit of coldfusion) and I'm having fun helping out J_Maxwell too.
I also have done stuff with the IIS webservers(lots of fun!).

Howdy ya'll,
I thought I'd go ahead and say Sam's not the only son in here; some of us are just hiding a little further in the background. :-)
I'm a "Linux only" guy. I'm currently using and/or learning Iptables (firewall), Squid (proxy), Apache (webserver), qmail (e-mail server), djbdns (BIND replacement for DNS), MySQL, PHP and HTML. Eventually I'd like to learn C/C++, but I think I'll learn Python and/or Perl first. Oh, and my Linux machines are running Debian Linux v. 3.0, for any other Linux fans out there. :-)
I look forward to participating in more of the discussions in the future.

Greetings in Christ Jesus!
I have been a programmer for 12 years working mostly in C/C++ in the Windows consumer applications environment. For the past 3 years, I have been working exclusively in web application development with ASP, VBScript (yuk), C++ COM objects, SQL on SQL Server 2000, XML, XSLT, and HTML of course. My current work is in the new .NET environment using C# and ASP.NET. I also worked for almost a year in the Java/JSP environment...just enough to truly appreciate C# and the awesome development tools for it.
I too would love to teach my children about computer technology in an environment that brings glory to to our Heavenly Father. They are still too young to know about the Internet; either its strengths, or its horrible pitfalls, and I want to move forward prayerfully.
I look forward to this forum!
In Him,

Hello all,
I've been in programming for almost 15 years off and on. I don't have formal training, the Lord has seen to it that I've never been able to make it through a computer science class. I learned FORTRAN long ago and did some modeling in that language; did some BASIC and finally ended up in Visual Basic when I had to do a web-based data project.
I left VB about 2 years ago--just before .net. I'm now doing JSP/Servlet web applications. Hope I can help out with those type questions and maybe we can find a few more java men so I can do some leaning.
Standing on the promises,
Norm Bedwell
P.S. I don't do these forum things. My wife is a vet at them and tries to correct my etiquette (or lack thereof). Please excuse my goofs as she can't see everything. |

I am looking forward to interacting with some other programmers. I am a contractor and work mostly at home, so I miss some of the advantage of rubbing shoulders with others that have similar work or interests. Thanks for the forum!
My work stuff includes a decade of building business tools using Microsoft Access. I'm pretty good at Visual Basic for Applications (Microsoft Office) and have some recent experience with Java, JSP, ASP, HTML, VBScript and JavaScript. I'd be happy to pass on anything that might help.
My hobby interests include programming microcontrollers. I'm a novice with Microchip PICs and the third-party OOPic controller. I'd enjoy tossing around some project ideas with you if you enjoy that kind of programming. |

It's great to finally see a family-oriented programmers forum!!!
I'm a "Computer Expert" (that means if it has to do with computers, I'm the one to do it) for PJ Trailer Mfg.
[HYPERLINK@www.pj-trailers.com] (mostly my handiwork)
Officially I'm their Manager of Information Technology.
I've been using VB/VBA along with MSAccess for 7 years now. I've been asked to pursue more advanced web programming so I can keep up with the competition [HYPERLINK@www.loadtrail.com]
Again, great to be a part of this! |

I hope I can be of service.
I have many years experience in engineering and computer related stuff. The past several years have been focused on Microsoft technologies, but I may be branching out from that somewhat.
Not only do I do hands on application development, but have also worked as a professional trainer, teaching software developers across the country. I am currently an independent contractor in software development, working locally and staying close to home.
The technologies that I have worked in and taught include:
Visual Basic, COM/DCOM, MTS/COM+, MS SQL Server, HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, VBScript, ASP, IIS, XML/XSLT, and MS Visual Studio.NET. I have been a technical editor in two VB books, and authored several articles in software design and object-oriented programming concepts.
I look forward to learning more from the experiences of the many talented people that I see are contributing to this new forum.

Hey I think this is a really good idea to have a forum like this. I am 14(at the data of this post) and I would be glad to try to answer (or maybe even ask) questions about PHP (and MySQL), Python (and Tkinter), HTML, CGI, and some C (not C++).
Hope I can help,

My name is Robert Matthews. I've been programming in Basic/Visual Basic for almost 20 years and have a degree in Computer Science. About 90% of the programming that I do these days is data management, screen development (AF) and statistics using SAS.
It's great to see a programming forum for Christian programmers.

Thanks, Steve, for creating this forum! A great idea.
I'm Garret's dad (his intro is a couple entries back from mine), and I have worked as a programmer for about 15 years now, mostly using the C language, but recently using C++ more. God has blessed me with six sons, some of whom have begun developing some programming aptitude and ability.
While most of my professional programming work has been on Intel-based Windows (3.0 to XP and everything in between), I have worked on a variety of platforms (including VAX/VMS, Atlanta_Joe!) and actually prefer working on Linux or UNIX systems. I'm writing this reply on an old SPARCstation 10 running Solaris 8, but soon to be converted over to either Debian or NetBSD.
I would like to voice my agreement with macbthpsw about the value of assembly language programming on older, simpler processors for really learning how computers work. I "cut my teeth" on 8080 and Z80 assembly language and hardware interfacing myself.
Based on my software engineerng experience as somewhat of a debugging consultant, I think the most neglected part of programmers' education/training these days must be that they seem to lack an understanding of how software runs down at the machine op-code level. For the really difficult debugging problems (especially the ones that only seem to appear when running optimized code), you sometimes have to toggle your debugger into disassembly mode, turn on the CPU register display, and watch what the machine is really doing. Many programmers these days seem to lack the patience and understanding to do that. /* end of sermon */
I look forward to some good discussions on this forum. From this thread, it looks like we have a wonderful group of Christian men and youths here, each with unique God-given talents, abilities, and experiences.

Hi!
I want to thank you for making this forum! It's great! I'm 14, and I'm mostly into programing in Visual Basic, but I know a bit of Java. I started programing when I was about 6 or 7, in QBasic. After that I got Visual Basic 2, and now I'm using Visual Studio .NET. I also do some website design.

Hi y'all...
I'm a Systems Engineer at LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville. A lot of my background is in programming various Interactive Voice Response systems (IVRs). At LifeWay we have an Edify system. We use a Siemens 9006 phone system running Procenter Call Center software. Before I started here, the Edify was way under used. So, I have taken over the primary responsibility of coding call director applications to play intro greetings to all of the call centers. In addition to the Edify, I have experience with InterVoice, AT&T Conversant, Visual Voice, and VBVoice. I've also done some Visual Basic coding, including some .DLLs that run in our Edify system. Here at LifeWay, we're implementing a lot of fun technology. The procenter software allows calls to be routed to call center agents based on skill sets defined by their supervisors. The Procenter software captures call information for each call that comes in (The number they dial, the number they are calling from, the id of the agent taking the call, the amount of time they have held in the queue so far, etc.). Eventually, we will be able to use this information to code custom screen pops for our agents, so that their phone numbers will be tied to their account codes, etc. We are just about to install a new monitoring solution that will allow us to record and review every call that comes into our call centers. There are some neat aspects to this software that I'll get to play with as well.
I've got a B.S. in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. This position at LifeWay has been an answered prayer. I have great job satisfaction using technical skills for God's work. I've been here for 2 years, with 15 years in the industry.
In Christ...

Hey,
I'm a 16 y.o. home-schooled student from Australia. I started programming around the age of 10 (QBASIC), and I'm currently doing Uni by correspondence (online learning), so that I don't have to travel from home.
I am doing Java programming, and Computer Systems, which includes CPU logic, JK Flip Flops, and more.
I'm hoping to get some sort of a computer science degree at uni. I stumbled on this forum through Google, and I think it's a fantastic idea. Too many times have I searched for answers in other forums, with ungodly beliefs, language, and even Adult sections.
Regards,

This is an old thread .. but it seems a good place to tell where I am coming from.
I taught myself BASIC back in High School (76-80) and took as many computing classes at college as I could fit in on my way to a degree in Engineering. As it turns out, my career as an engineer was God's way of telling me that I didn't know what was best for me, He did. When I was laid off from engineering, I spent 10 months looking for work. I was hired by a small company in Southeastern Wisconsin, a place where they hire you because they think they can get along with you, and they figure anything you don't already know is something you won't have to unlearn. I learned there about EDI, and by God's timing, when that job ended God had my current job ready for me. I have been working for Master Lock Company now for 11 years, working with an EDI translator called Gentran, and writing PL*SQL to interface with our Oracle Financials applications. In the meantime, I have learned COBOL, Perl, and a little Java and Python. Like many of you, I play with computers at home. We have two that share a DSL connection, so my wife and I can both be online at the same time. And somewhere in that mess I call my workshop is my Linux computer, waiting to take shape. One of these days... ;)

Greetings,
I am enjoying your Forum. As a way of introduction I am a HomeSchooling Dad with two sons 5, 10 and a precious daughter 11. My Wife and I were also homeschooled and have the rare privilege of being a second generation homeshcool family.
Your forum is great. To provide for my home I have been an IT contractor for a number of years. I am a EDI transaction engineer specializing in Encrypted Data Transfer systems such as Connect:Direct and Connect:Enterprise. By association I also work with SSH and PGP. I work with Unix, MVS or Zos, and Windows 2003. I spent a number of years working with Desktops and Laptops and am proficient with most operating systems and hardware. Please feel free to email me any questions in these areas as I enjoy helping out.
My eldest son has recently expressed an interest in Computer Programming and we have had encouragement from "Preparing Sons to provide for a Single Income Family". We are working to learn a simple language to start my son with something. I have been working on getting some material to start him on learning the basics of C++ and HTML.
Thanks again,
Josh

Hi from Australia!
I'm NOT a programmer...( am I in the right place?). Actually, I've jumped in here because I have a 13 yo son who is crazy about computers, loves to play computer games (which I largely curtail and carefully vet), and has expressed a desire to learn computer programming.
Having no knowledge or desire for programming myself, I thought I'd look around in here for guidance for us both as to how to get started in programming, what language(s) are best to learn for what purposes, how to learn the languages, job prospects, etc, etc. Looks like I've come to the right place.
God Bless
Paul
