I am looking for help in guiding my 14yo son into programming. He is very much intrested in this type of work. I have given him books on general computer operations and some web design books.( The For Dummies books.) He seems to zip through these however I would like suggestions on which programming language for him to pursue. Which books or programs are good for a beginner? Cost is not that big of a concern as I have several other children that may be following this area of intrest. He is a very good self learner and a reading is not a problem with this bookworm.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dave |

Dave,
I would recommend that he would start learning Object Pascal. I started with this language and now am programming PHP, and am starting to learn C++ and VB (programming for PocketPC). Object Pascal is very simple, although not cheap.
Here is the link to the Compiler/IDE that I use, and highly recommend:

Dave,
Joseph had some good feedback for you. It has been really good for him. Then it is very important to generate meaningful projects for him. Find real work for him to do with his programming, programs that would be helpful for you or others you know.
Depending on what state you live in, you may qualify as an official school and be able to get educational discounts. The negative is that you have certain license requirements that you don't have if you purchase a commercial package.
In Christ Jesus,
